The Young and The Restless, By Kevin Hertzog

From beginning to end any builder knows your age and experience has a major influence on the outcome of your project. Most younger and inexperienced enthusiasts, from your regular run-of-the-mill high school student driving "daddy's car" or a junk box they purchased by flipping burgers, knows their vehicles are stock! Nothing's being touched or upgraded, most junk boxes on wheels I see are falling apart or so used up that you would swear the car is older then the driver! The average high school kid with a few bucks spends the majority of their cash on repairing that vehicle from falling apart or they look at their used vehicle and say to themselves "this thing would look nice with some upgrades!"

Most inexperienced builders I've seen use the help of their girlfriends, family members, and tons of hours at that part-time job to purchase a new set of custom rims, new rubber, or a nice body kit. Other builders would go further than a set of rims and new rubber. They would pop that hood throw in a custom intake system, a few polished goodies, maybe a supercharger, or a new custom exhaust system for that deep throaty sound. Not bad for a start, because most builders have to start somewhere!

Looking years ahead and several custom rides later to an experienced builder, they know how the experience from previous customs will help them out when planning for newer projects. The bottom line: the more experienced you've had bustin' knuckles on other cars the better your rides will be in the future! This in turn gives you experience and prowess among the custom community. Those with a little experience and know-how, are the types of men and women who, aren't afraid to make a mistake and redo it if it turns out all wrong. Maybe the rims just don't flow with the rest of the truck or maybe the paint is all wrong... no big deal, you just take a wack at it again until it is right... right? The less experienced builders are gonna have issues wtih cash flow, but more so than that is the fact they lack experience to correct the problem with the least amount of time and work. More experienced builders can rethink a project and fix it with a minimal amount of sweat equity in order to fix it. Afterall, customizing is all about appearance! These are the builders and customizers who, aren't afraid to push the limits of their wallets and talents to build an award winning ride. Until you have the experience though, you will remain part of the young and the restless!
