Elite Streets Magazine - The All Encompassing Custom Auto Enthusiast Magazine

Backdraft By J.R. Janicek

This 1999 Chevy S-10 pickup started life like all the rest that rolled off the assembly line-- stock and very boring. Jeff Flynn decided to put a little spice into the life of his otherwise boring truck and developed it into the wild custom mini you see right before your eyes! Jeff's truck combines several genres of the custom auto world: mini-trucks, imports, and hot rods. More importantly, Jeff was able to combine each genre in tasteful and seamless fashion, thus producing one of the hottest S-10s ESM has photographed to date.

No self-respecting mini-trucker would ever dream of driving a truck that has a stock suspension setup, so Jeff decided to bring his truck down to ground level which keeps his ride in-line with the mini-truckin' genre's ideals. Up front, Jeff went with Air Ride Technologies' strong arms. In the rear, Jeff installed a KP Components cantilever 6-link and an in-frame 8-inch notch. Jeff also installed two Thompson compressors to fill a 6-gallon air tank, all of which was mounted inside the bed. Adjustability is enhanced by Parker valves, and ½-inch air lines keep the air flowing, while Jeff monitors the pressure with KP Component gauges from inside the cab. When Jeff parks his truck at a show, he hits the appropriate switches and the body lays easily over a set of chrome 20-inch Speedster Five Star Foose wheels wrapped in 233/35ZR20 Goodyear Eagle HP tires.

Under the hood, Jeff decided to beef up the stock 2.2 four-banger with a K&N cold air intake, Helix throttle body spacer, Honed throttle body, power pulleys, Screamin' Demon coil packs and performance plug wires. Nitrous, an import tuners favorite was plumbed into the engine for an additional 75hp power on demand. Cleaning up the engine bay are Street Glow wire loom, chrome radiator hoses, and various painted pieces. Protecting the engine and all of its custom parts is a fiberglass ram air hood.

When it came to body and paintwork, Jeff knew who could handle the majority of the paint, but relied on outside sources for the metal work. The door handles, stake pockets, 3rd brake light, and tailgate handle were all shaved in the name of custom. The stock taillights were ditched for a set of custom taillights that would eventually be painted to blend in with the rest of the truck. Billet motorcycle side view mirrors replace the stock issue and help to brighten up the exterior details. The bumper was tossed into the trash and a roll pan was molded in its place. The bed was tubbed to help keep road debris out and a custom wood floor with diamond plate strips was installed for aesthetic appeal. The walls of the pickup box were covered in carpet as a final touch to the exterior details before paint.

Once the truck had been blocked to perfection, Jeff rolled his sled into the paint booth and laid down a combination of PPG Viper Blue and Lamborghini Silver paint along with House of Kolor Tangerine Kandy with prizmatique flake. In true hot rod fashion, Jeff taped off the truck in order to produce an arranged flame graphic that flows down each side of the truck. For a more finished look, Jeff hired Bob Fiddler of Johnny Signs to do a little custom airbrush work on the hood and tailgate to finalize the exterior details.

The interior also received a little custom work. More Viper Blue was laid down on the dash and door panels. Blue Tenzo-R racing seats were installed which gives props to the import genre, while a custom diamond plate center console helps to shine up the interior. Jeff also added some additional bright work with a Budnik billet steering wheel, custom vents, diamond plate floor mats, Nu Image gauge face, Plasmaglow toggle switches, and billet window cranks.

The ability to rock the entire neighborhood from your ride is always a plus, so inside the cab Jeff installed Fusion 10-inch subs and component speakers. A Fusion CD headunit, DVD player, and 7½-inch visor monitors run all of the audio and visual entertainment.

Jeff's truck is a cool (or should we say hot?) mini-truck. and the "back draft" from its overall combination of multiple genres will sear the senses and make you take a closer look!

Shout Out: "I did all ofthe work myself except for the metal work. I want to send a shout out to my boy Van Horn of Van Horn Tint & Accs., Doug of Feltners Body Shop, and my wife Erin and kids- Tank, Ashton, and Leslie." -Jeff Flynn
